iBooks
don't come with a built-in floppy drive. Apple says that they're
obsolete, but I beg to differ. The lowly floppy is very handy,
great for transporting word processing files to and from school
or work. But, for more "heavy duty" users, there is
another option - the Iomega Zip Drive. There are two types of
Zip Drives, 250 megabyte and 100 megabyte. The 250 meg variety
can read both 100 and 250 meg disks. I use my Zips to keep all
my school files on - homework, etc. Several computers at my school
have Zip drives, so if I forget my printout of something, I'm
saved!
Remember,
a floppy disk can only store 3.5 megs. If you need serious
storage, then the Zip Drive is for you. But also remember that
Zip disks can cost up to $12 bucks each, while floppies only cost
$.50 or so each!
(There
are other types of external USB storage devices, but at the moment
I will just concentrate on floppies and Zips, as they are the
two most common types. If neither of these appeal to you for one
reason or another, try looking around for information on SuperDisk
drives and CD/R drives.)
